Fasting, Feasting – Anita Desai

Fasting, FeastingFasting, Feasting is about women’s life and men’s life, life in India and life in America. You’ll find out that what you’ve been told about Indian women’s life is true: their only destiny is to become good wives. And yet, you’ll also find out that being a boy can be as hard as being a girl in a traditional Indian family, where all the expectations hang over you. In both cases, what you’ll become has already been chosen by parents and social conventions. There’s no escape for both men and women. And if life can be dull in an Indian small city, it can be equally meaningless in an American city. So, lack of abundance and excess of abundance, lack of concern and excessive concern, finally coincide leaving empty souls and minds. Besides, Western women’s life is not as pink as we usually picture it: yes, we’re not only dowry bearers but our lives are so influenced by the images advertisement sells us that clearly we’re not as free as we think we are.
